Pitta: The Principle of Thermal Energy

Medically Reviewed By

Dr. Rahul K R, BAMS
"Pitta is the force of heat and light; it governs digestion, hormonal balance, and intelligence."

Pitta is the biological energy of transformation. Composed of Fire and Water, it is the metabolic engine responsible for chemistry, heat regulation, and enzymatic breakdown.

While Vata provides motion, Pitta provides the heat necessary for change. It translates food into nutrients, perceptions into knowledge, and hormonal signals into physiological action. In modern terms, Pitta correlates with the Endocrine System and the Hepatobiliary (Liver/Bile) System.

The Five Sub-Doshas of Pitta

Pitta operates through five specialized sites of transformation (*Alokas*):

Stomach/Small Intestine

Pachaka Pitta

Digestive enzymes, Agni peak, nutrient extraction.

Liver/Spleen

Ranjaka Pitta

Blood formation, bile secretion, iron metabolism.

Heart/Brain

Sadhaka Pitta

Cognition, emotional processing, willpower.

Eyes

Alochaka Pitta

Visual perception, light processing.

Skin

Bhrajaka Pitta

Luster, skin temperature, pigmentation.

Classical Foundation

"पित्तं सस्नेह तीक्ष्ण उष्णं लघु विस्त्रं सरं द्र्वम्"

"Pittaṃ sasneha tīkṣṇa uṣṇaṃ laghu visraṃ saraṃ drvam"

Pitta is characterized by slight oiliness (sasneha), sharpness (tikshna), heat (ushna), lightness (laghu), malodorousness (visra), mobility (sara), and liquid nature (drava).

Clinical Manifestations of Pitta

Balanced Pitta

Sharp intellect, strong digestion, healthy complexion, warm extremities, and clear decision-making.

Imbalanced (Vitiated) Pitta

Inflammation, acid reflux, skin rashes, irritability, and excessive body heat.
