Vikriti refers to the current state of doshic imbalance in an individual. Unlike Prakriti (which is fixed), Vikriti is dynamic and influenced by diet, environment, lifestyle, and emotional stress.
In modern terms, if Prakriti is your DNA (Genotype), Vikriti is your Phenotype-the physical expression of your health right now. It represents the "drift" away from your biological baseline. When Vikriti significantly deviates from Prakriti for an extended period, it manifests as clinical disease.
The 3 Pillars of Vikriti Diagnosis
Ayurvedic physicians use three primary diagnostic vectors to determine the nature of Vikriti:
Darshana
Visual inspection of the tongue, eyes, nails, and gait to identify systemic congestion or depletion.
Sparshana
Nadi Pariksha (Pulse Diagnosis). Feeling the 'current' of the doshas to detect sub-clinical drift.
Prashna
Analyzing sleep patterns, digestive efficiency, and appetite consistency.

"विकारो धातुवैषम्यं, साम्यं प्रक्रतिरुच्यते"
"vikāro dhātuvaiṣamyaṃ, sāmyaṃ prakṛtirucyate"
"Sickness (Vikara/Vikriti) is the state of disequilibrium among the tissues; health (Prakriti) is the state of equilibrium."
— Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 9.4Closing the Baseline Gap
The objective of Ayurvedic therapy is not to achieve an "ideal" balance, but to restore your original balance.
Dosha Reduction (Shodhana)
Removing the excess accumulated doshas that define the Vikriti state (e.g. Detoxification).
Dosha Palliatives (Shamana)
Using herbs and diet to soothe the aggravated doshas back to the baseline.
